Biographie
Michael Ross is in grade 8 at St. Alexander Catholic School. At the Niagara Regional Science Fair his project “Shedding Some Light" won the James Draper Memorial, Niagara Electrical Association, Brock Physics and the received a bronze medal in the Junior Division. Michael won the 2009 Niagara Catholic District School Board's “Catch the Spirit Award of Excellence” for his outstanding qualities in Catholic leadership, family commitment, community involvement and academics. Michael also received the school's highest score in the Gauss Mathematics Contest and the Certificate of Distinction for ranking in the top 25% from the University of Waterloo. For the last two years he won gold at the Niagara Catholic's regional competition on both the chess and basketball teams. For 3 years Michael has represented the Welland Warriors Basketball team and last year helped win gold at the Ontario Cup-Division 3. Michael's 2009 basketball success continued with the Niagara Bantam Boys Basketball team. He volunteers with the Pelham Public Library book sales. Michael is currently serving his second term on the Pelham Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. This year as secretary, he also writes a newspaper column for the Voice of Pelham “YACKing with Michael Ross”.

Shedding Some Light

Sommaire:This project compared compact fluorescent to incandescent light bulbs. Light intensity was measured using a Joly Photometer and proved that lower wattage compact fluorescent bulbs produce similar amounts of light intensity than higher wattage incandescent bulbs. A calorimeter was used to demonstrate that incandescent bulbs use more power to produce heat than to produce light, as compared to similar intensity and wattage fluorescent bulbs.
