Biography
I am Alex Smith and my entry in the Canada Wide Science Fair is titled “Seed Freeze”. I am looking forward to presenting my experiment which studies the effects of moisture and temperature during storage on the germination rate of plant seeds. I am a Grade 8 student at Bible Hill Junior High School in Nova Scotia. I have been involved in Science Fair projects since Grade 4 and have previously placed well at regional competitions. In addition to my science fair project and my academic work, my interests include badminton, volleyball and playing video games. I also have a small coin collection and enjoy looking for interesting coins to add to this collection. In the future I am interested in attending the Nova Scotia Agricultural College to pursue a career in environmental science.

Abstract:This experiment studied the effects of temperature and moisture on the germination rates of several varieties of plant seeds. Germination rates were evaluated using a home developed germination test. Seeds exposed to a combination of freezing temperatures and high moisture had the greatest reduction in germination. The results provide practical considerations for the storage and handling of plant seeds.
