Biography
My name is Alexander Rey and I am currently a fifth-year student at Brantford Collegiate Institute in Brantford, Ontario. At my school, I have been involved in a wide range of activities, ranging from debating (where I competed at the Ontario Provincial Finals) to athletics (including the badminton and cross-country teams). I currently am the treasurer of our Student Council. Outside of school, I sit on the local youth advisory committee for the public health unit and enjoy playing the piano. My project started while completing a four-month internship at my local health unit, and discovering a significant data set that had yet to be entered. After entering the data, and consulting with the epidemiologist, I started looking at all the possible ways the data could be analyzed, and from there my project took off. From this point on, I hope to work with the health unit to apply some of my findings to their programming. I would encourage students starting out to connect with a government agency that oversees an area of interest, as they can be excellent sources. In the future, I am hoping to attend university for engineering physics, possibly obtaining a masters of epidemiology beyond that.

Abstract:This research project examines the relationship between socioeconomic factors and oral health in Brant, Ontario. A semi-ecological analysis was performed using correlation, ANOVA, and Tukey post-hoc tests. Overall, there was a significant correlation between high-risk socioeconomic factors and low oral health scores, a result consistent with existing literature. In particular, housing and family composition factors exhibited a major impact on decay rates.
