Biography
My name is Nathan McNally and I am currently in grade 8 French Immersion at Kings County Academy in Kentville, Nova Scotia. I am frequently trying to figure out how things work. I often invent things in my mind. I love music, as I play trumpet, French horn, piano and I sing. I have written some music as well. I play soccer, read and enjoy being outside -- especially canoeing and camping. I have been successful at Concours d'art oratoire (a French public speaking competition), winning provincials the last three years. The idea for this project started a couple years ago when I began imagining various ways to capture human energy. In the future I hope to become an engineer, an inventor, and a musician. I have always wanted to find ways to make life better. I enjoy dreaming about inventions which could improve our world and the lives of its people. Someday I hope to realize some of these dreams.

Step Up The Power
Challenge:Energy
Category:Junior
Region:Annapolis Valley
City:Kentville, NS
School:Kings County Academy
Abstract:Much of the energy humans normally expend goes to waste. To recover some of this energy, I created a floor tile that transforms kinetic energy into electrical energy using magnetic electric generators from hand pump flashlights. Each step made a small amount of electricity which I could store and use. With improvements, tiles like this could become a practical way to harness already existing energy.
