Over the past couple of years, I have been participating in the science fair. I have a thirst for knowledge and education. In 2006, I was one of two students to get honors with distinction among forty-two students. I am also expecting to receive the Edmonton Muslim Achievement Awards Night (EMAAN) Science Award this year. I have been a part of many activities including the campaign of Mayor Bill Smith’s re-election. In addition, I was the runner-up for my school’s student council election in 2006. I hope to have a career in either medicine or pediatrics. I enjoy playing a variety of sports including figure skating, soccer and badminton. Last but not least, I look for moments to spend with my family and friends. |
| Sabrina Islam Are We Genetically Different From Other Species?
Division: | Biotechnology / None | Category: | Junior | Region: | Edmonton | City: | Edmonton, AB | School: | Edmonton Islamic School | Abstract: | An open research question in the Science Magazine was, “What genetic changes made us uniquely human?” To this end, the following proteins (globin, FOXP2, HOXD13, T2R13, Ataxin-2 and GDF5) are selected from the protein database, SWISS-PROT. The proteins’ sequences are compared using multiple alignment and phylogenetic analyses. It is concluded that the distinctive forms come from those proteins which make structure, cognitive, and other functions. |
