| My name is Prashanthi Baskaran. I am studying at Elmwood School. My passion for science has been a driving force for all my accomplishments. I was awarded the gold medal at the Ottawa Regional Science Fair and selected to represent at the Canadian Wide Science Fair. I won the silver medal, special award from the Biomedical Association and UWO entrance scholarship. At the regional level I won several special awards - Professional Engineers, CHIR, GDML Medical Life and Science. Participating regularly in the Sanofi Aventis Biotech Challenge I won several cash awards, including the prestigious NRC’s Linda Beynon Award for Biomedical Research. Sanofi offered me summer student positions at Health Canada and the Heart Institute. On an extra-curricular level, I play on my school’s varsity AA basketball and AA volleyball teams. As a team leader of Eastern Ontario Envirothon team, I represented Elmwood and won the regional competition at Lakehead University. I am leading Amnesty International and have attended many leadership conferences including CAIS, WAC. I volunteer weekly at the Sheppard’s of Good Hope. I am an above 90% student with several academic awards. Overall, I strive to be a well-rounded individual and continue to involve myself in many opportunities. |

Detecting Atherosclerosis - Cytokine Profiling of Peritoneal Macrophages Exposed

Atherosclerosis develops at a young age however; symptoms appear at a latter time. Objective: “To profile the cytokine expressions of Apolipoprotein E knock-out mice’s macrophages exposed to Porphyromonas gingivalis.” The study outlined that a definite relationship exists between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis. This is an indicator for early signs of atherosclerosis in patients. |
