Lauren - My name is Lauren Murdoch, I am fifteen years old, and a grade 9 student at Kirkland Lake District Composite School. In my school, I am involved with Science Club, Badminton, and I am involved with our school recycling program. After school, I enjoy working out. I have also been figure skating for twelve years, and I am a volunteer coach at our figure skating club. Science is my best and favorite subject at school. For two years in a row, I have gotten an award for the highest grade in my class in science. This year, I attended the Science Olympics in Timmins, Ontario. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and babysitting. I am also very close to my family of four. In the summer, I work at Murdoch Group Inc., detailing cars. In the future, I would love to attend the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, or Western University, to study business or sciences.

Making Bricks from Mine Tailings
Division:Health Sciences / Environmental Innovation
Category:Intermediate
Region:Timmins
City:Kirkland Lake, ON
School:Kirkland Lake Collegiate & Vocational Institute
Abstract:Mine tailings are a waste byproduct of the gold mining process used throughout the world. Millions of tons of tailings are stored in unsightly ponds (often native lakes and wetlands) forming environmental wastelands. By combining tailings verified to be chemically inert with portland cement in varying ratios, we produced a molded brick strong enough to serve as a commercial or decorative product.
