Biography
My name is Patrick Lutz and I am a grade 8 student at St. Augustine's Catholic School in Dundas. I play on every sports team that my school has and was the grade 8 chess tournament rep for our school. In the winter I like to play hockey and ski and in the summer I like to fish and bike. I live on a 100 acre farm and own an ATV that I like to ride. Growing up on a farm has giving me a great appreciation for nature and I like that my project has the potential to help preserve our environment. My teacher Mrs. Grant inspired me to excel in science and my Opa gave me the idea to investigate wood ash because I remembered that he used to spread it on his sidewalk. I plan to enter my project in an Eco Entrepreneur contest in Hamilton this June. I am also pursuing local businesses to partner with to test my idea next winter in real world applications. The Hamilton Port Authority has already agreed to do this. I would encourage other students to do a science fair project but always pick a topic you like.

Eco Melt
Challenge:Environment
Category:Junior
Region:Bay Area
City:Troy, ON
School:St. Augustine E.S.
Abstract:My goal was to find an alternative ice treatment that was more environmentally friendly than road salt, which is destroying animals, plant life and natural ecosystems. Wood ash outperformed all other treatments that I tested, in both a boot traction test and a vehicle brake test. Wood ash provides increased traction and therefore increased personal safety, while still being environmentally friendly.
