Biography
My name is Erica Forsythe and I am 14 years old. I attend Golden Learning Centre, which is located in the small mining community of Balmertown, Ontario. My interests include competitive figure skating, volleyball, reading, science, and mathematics. One achievement I am most proud of has been placing 1st at the Regional Science Fair three times over the course of four years. When researching what topic of interest to base my science fair project on, I was very fascinated by the concept of bacteria. After further research about recent events in the news, I was confident that there was a better way to treat the recent outbreak of E. coli in romaine lettuce, leading to testing natural ways to stop the growth of E. coli. For future science fair participants, I would encourage them to ensure they have a passion for their topic of study. Learning and exploring a topic of interest is a great way to develop a great science fair project. At this time, I would enjoy pursuing a career in microbiology to further expand my knowledge of bacteria.

Abstract:The purpose of this project was to discover if garlic juice and oregano oil could be used to effectively fight off the E. coli bacteria. After testing 18 petri dishes with the liquids of milk, garlic juice, or oregano oil, and adding E. coli to certain dishes, further testing is required to prove my theory correct.
