Scott - My name is Scott Cameron. I live in Oakville, Ontario with my parents, my brother and my cat. I have attended W.H. Morden Public School since grade 5, after being identified as gifted in grade 4. I am now in grade 8. I play goalie on a hockey team, and enjoy scale modeling. | Alan - My name is Alan Joseph Stagg and I was born on April 25, 1994 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. I was the second child of Kim and Parker Stagg, my older brother being Michael. I stayed in Newfoundland until 1999 when we left for Oakville, Ontario. We arrived at our new home just in time for a quick Christmas and busy New Year. I attended River Oaks Public School and Post's Corners Public School until grade 5 when I was accepted into the gifted program at W. H. Morden. I am currently finishing my final year at Morden and am preparing to attend the Accelerated Learning Program at White Oaks Secondary School. I now have a younger brother, who is just over two years old, quite a difference from my brother and I, now turning 17 and 14. During the Bay Area Science Fair, my partner and I’s project on pykrete won 6 awards as well as the trip to the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. I enjoy basketball, computer games, reading and baseball, as well participating in the school band and track events. |
| Scott Cameron, Alan Stagg Pykrete: the new concrete?
Division: | International / None | Category: | Junior | Region: | Bay Area | City: | Oakville, ON | School: | W. H. Morden Public School | Abstract: | This project studied pykrete, a frozen mixture of water and sawdust. Pykrete was first studied in World War II for use in a massive aircraft carrier. Strength, buoyancy, and melt times for pykrete were measured. In a drop test, a 10% sawdust-by-weight mixture was the strongest. Buoyancy tests were inconclusive. Mixtures with more sawdust by weight had slower melt times. |
