Biography
Hughstin Grimshaw- Surette is 14 years old and lives in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He is in grade 8 at Maple Grove Educational Center. His interests are drawing, archery, bike riding, reading fantasy novels and he also has a fascination with dragons. Hughstin does track & field, plays soccer and also volunteers with the younger divisions. He enjoys many outdoor activities such as taking his dog Fenway to dog agility, hiking through the woods and also working with his Grandfather and family on the family Christmas Tree Farm. Hughstin has been involved in swimming, basketball and cross-country over the years. In grade 6 he received The C. W. Hayes Award for outstanding academics and best all around student. Hughstin was a part of the winning team at the Tri-County Regional School Boards Science Olympics in grade 7. At the end of grade 7 he received top marks in Social Studies, Art as well as Highest Academic Standing for the year. Hughstin’s latest achievement would be placing 2nd in the Junior Division at the Tri-County Regional School Board Science Fair.

Straight Cut, One Cut, Two Cut, Which is the Best Christmas Tree Cut?

Abstract:This project compares three different cuts to the trunk of a Balsam Fir Christmas Tree. The intent was to see if multiple cuts to the trunk would affect the amount of water absorbed by the tree over a three week period. The results proved that the tree with two extra cuts absorbed the most water therefore staying the freshest loosing only 5 g of needles.
