Jeffrey - Jeffrey is currently a grade 12 student at David Thompson Secondary. He is a service student for the school's chemistry department and is actively involved in homework clubs and extracurriculars such as Reach For The Top - a trivia competition encompassing both science and arts. In addition to his interests in science, he also enjoys designing flash-oriented websites for his school. His most recent works include websites for both physics and chemistry at David Thompson. In the future, Jeffrey aspires to become a biotechnologist to research novel cures and approaches to diseases and pathogens. | Eric - As I grew up in a humble family of six, I was taught that hard work and undying willpower are necessary in life. Although I go to school primarily for learning, I am also a part of the Service Club and Math Challengers Club. In my spare time outside of school, I practise Taekwondo regularly and volunteer in various areas of the community. My greatest passion in life is definitely Tennis. I can recall numerous instances where I hit tennis balls until the sun set. I hope to pursue higher levels of tennis competition at the university level. Although I love the province of British Columbia and the city of Vancouver, I will likely pursue post-secondary education in Eastern Canada or the United States of America. |
| Jeffrey Ma, Eric Szeto Evaluation of Mangosteen Fruits and Extracts by HPLC and in Prostate Cancer Cell
Division: | Life Sciences | Category: | Senior | Region: | Greater Vancouver | City: | Vancouver, BC | School: | David Thompson Secondary | Abstract: | To determine if the tropical fruit mangosteen has anti-cancer properties on prostate cancer cells, serial dilutions were made from various sources of mangosteen. These dilutions were then used to challenge two cell lines, LNCaP and PC-3. An assay was performed after 24 and 48 hours of treatment to determine cell viability. Our final results showed a decrease in cell survival with increasing concentrations of treatment. |
