The main reason I became so interested in the sciences was because of my experience, the past few years, volunteering with children with special needs, including those with Down Syndrome, William’s Syndrome and Fragile X, at an organization called the Friendship Circle. Beyond my course material in biology, I saw firsthand the impact chromosomal abnormalities had on those with developmental problems. I began to appreciate the power of each gene on the human body and better recognized how genetics affects our lives and society. In the future, I hope to become a doctor in pediatric oncology. Recently, I have been involved in numerous programs such as Gene Researcher for a Week where I did a stage at the St. Justine’s Hospital and have been awarded the Dr.Bessie Lawrence Scholarship at the Weizmann’s Institute of Science to do research this summer. Aside from my interest in science, I am the co-editor of the Yearbook and am involved in our school newspaper. I also love to travel, paint, scuba-dive and essentially enjoy life! |
