Biography
My name is Kate Berger, and I am from Medicine Hat, Alberta. I was born in New York and have also lived in Scotland. I am currently in grade eight at Alexandra Middle School. I have done two science fair projects and won six plaques at the regional science fair from them, this is my first CWSF. I like to swim and play the piano in my spare time. I also play the alto saxophone in my school band. My favourite subjects are science and language arts. I think that marine biology is an interesting branch of science and I hope to study it when I am older.

Region:Kiwanis Southeast Alberta
City:Medicine Hat, AB
School:Alexandra Junior High School
Abstract:Research showed that the common pen inks we use contain toxic chemicals. Environmentally friendly inks were prepared from blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. They were tested to see if they would be a practical writing substitute for artificial pen inks. The natural and artificial pen inks were tested under various conditions to compare which type would be easier for paper recycling companies to remove from paper.
