Biographies
Savannah - My name is Savannah Massimo. I live in Lakefield, Ontario. I am in Grade 11 at Lakefield District Secondary School. I am an avid horseback rider and participate in Eventing competitions with my horse, Gypsy. I enjoy reading, writing, and being outside. I hope to go to Law school and pursue Environmental Law. Both me and my partner, Nicole, care about the environment and decided that something had to be done to help the world in a positive way. We got the inspiration for this project, from watching and reading about the Gulf Oil Spill. It really bothered us that something like that could ever happen and we couldn't imagine something like this happening in a place where we live. Having the chance to go to Canada Wide Science Fair has been a very positive experience and I encourage anybody who is interested to take the opportunity and become part of the amazing experience that Science Fair has to offer.
Nicole - My name is Nicole Gastle, from Lakefield, Ontario. I attend school at Lakefield District Secondary School. I play volleyball for my school team and for the Peterborough Thunder Volleyball Club. I volunteer at the local hospital every Friday night. I hope to pursue medicine in the future. My partner, Savannah Massimo, and I have cared about the environment since we were in the Young's Point Public School Environmental cClub in Grade 2. We were devastated by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and decided for our school project to test materials that could absorb oil.

A Fibrous Answer to Oil Spills?
Défi:Environnement
Catégorie:Sénior
Région:Peterborough
Ville:Lakefield, ON
École:Lakefield District Secondary & Intermediate
Sommaire:In the weeks following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the global community learned that the oil industry was ill-equipped to recover the 5,000,000 barrels of oil that had escaped into the Gulf of Mexico. Oil-absorbency of various fibrous materials became the basis for designing an innovative oil-absorbent mat and recovery system for remediating an oil spill in sensitive aquatic environments.
