Biography
Perri Tutelman is a grade 10 student at R.C. Palmer Secondary in Richmond, B.C. Within her community she is an active student leader. She is a member of the Richmond Youth Foundation, and is the founder of her school’s Global Leadership club. Perri is a student ambassador of Youth Canada, and is a SMARTS school correspondent. As a volunteer with aquatic and children’s programs, Perri enjoys working with those who are disabled- helping them to overcome diversity. Perri is a City of Richmond “U-ROC” award recipient for outstanding community involvement. She placed second in the 2009 Sanofi-Aventis Biotalent Challenge, and hopes to continue her research at the BC Cancer Research Centre. Perri wishes to pursue a career in medicine.

Abstract:Breast cancer is the common cancer diagnosed in Canadian women. A novel treatment includes combining medicinal herbs with standard treatments. Artemisinin, a natural herb, has potential anti-cancer abilities due to its mechanism of action. The objective of this project is to characterize the effects in vitro of combination therapies including artemisinin, docetaxel and 5-fluorouracil on a panel of 4 breast cancer cell lines.
