Biography
My name is Akshaya Lakshmi and I am 12 years old. I live in Fort McMurray, Alberta where I am a grade eight student at École McTavish Junior High Public School. My project is to find the best method of making wood fire resistant using borax and sodium bicarbonate. I got inspired to do this especially from the Parsons Creek Landing fire. I enjoy dancing, singing, playing piano/instruments, swimming, drawing/painting, playing soccer and badminton. At school I’m involved in our first school play, Jazz Band, Student Council, Robotics and School Science Fair. I even got the chance to talk to Alberta’s Premier! I was also chosen to go to the Provincial Music Festival for Musical Theatre 12 and under. This year I was chosen as overall Alberta winner for the Canadian Heritage Poster Challenge 2012. I have participated in the Wood Buffalo Regional Science Fair 5 times and I have been awarded all five years. This year I got gold in the junior category. I would tell people that are thinking about doing a project that it’s a lot of fun and helps you learn. For future investigations I would try getting more different types of wood/paint/fire retardants.

Abstract:My project is to find the best method of making wood fire resistant using Borax and Sodium Bicarbonate. I did the experiment to find the best solution, paint, type of wood to combine with a fire retardant and if it is better to use wood treated with the fire retardant than wood coated with the fire retardant.
