Hello, my name is Joanne Putulik. I’m a grade 10 student at Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut. I enjoy participating in the community games and activities that our hamlet runs. I also enjoy qajaqing (kayaking) in the summer. My class and I built the Inuit traditional qajaqs and it makes it that much more special when we use them. I also enjoy watching hockey, baking with my sister, and going out on the land with my classmates in April. At our regional science fair, I came in 3rd place and also received the Intermediate Outstanding Report Award. My inspiration for my project came from wanting to learn more about what the Inuit used for warmth in the winter, when they lived in igloos and had no electricity. For future investigations, I plan on trying to mix the ingredients I used for my project to find out if it will give me a longer lasting fuel for light and warmth. The advice I would give to other students thinking about doing a project is don’t be afraid or shy to try new things because you never know what you’ll get to experience! |

We built our own qulliqs and tested three different types of fat: seal, caribou, and beluga. We learned how to render the oil from fat and how to create our own qulliqs and was surprised by the results. |
