Biographies
Sophia - Bonjour! I'm Sophia, and my project partner is Gillian. This is my second year at Canada Wide, and I'm so lucky to be able to return! I see science as the new frontier where the only limit is one's imagination; a frontier where inquiry and ability matter, not race or gender. I plan to become a surgeon, or an aero-space engineer. I also hope to join the Canadian Air Force. In the meantime, I work two jobs with children with special needs. I enjoy doing a variety of activities such as skating, swimming, running, singing, reading, acting, and watching anything with the amazing Hugh Laurie in it. Thanks to everyone involved with CWSF, and Team BASEF!
Gillian - My name is Gillian. My project partner is Sophia. I live in a family of five and attend Notre Dame Catholic High School in Burlington. I babysit young children and have been an altar-server in my parish since Grade 4. I love working with children and animals, and am a volunteer with the local recreation centre, helping kids with special needs. My favourite colour is green, and I am a little shy. My first experience with judging and challenges was in Grade 7 when we entered a Robotic Arm Building Challenge, and we won a bronze medal. In Grade 8, our modified Robotic Arm was awarded a gold medal. We first entered our Regional Science Fair last year when we studied the effectiveness of hand sanitizers. I am very creative and enjoy producing artwork, clay figures, and making jewelry. I love working on projects and am looking forward to our exciting week in Winnipeg.

We're Still Not Plastic Bags: Perfecting the Perfect Plastic
Division:Sciences de la santé / Innovation environnementale
Catégorie:Intermédiaire
Région:Bay Area
Ville:Burlington, ON
École:Notre Dame S.S.
Sommaire:The purpose of our project is to create a biodegradable plastic that has the desirable properties of regular plastics, without being harmful to the environment. We incorporated different materials with water-resistant properties into our plastic recipe (water, gelatine, and glycerine)- Beta Carotene and Glucosamine-and performed various tests to determine which plastic was the most successful. Our glucosamine plastic proved to be the most successful.
