Biography
Sebastien Galand is grade 8 student in the Science Excellence Program at Laval Junior Academy. He has been on the Honor Roll every term. He is also a proud member of 100 Laval Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The idea for his project came to him in history class when they learned about how students in flood prone areas risk their lives to get to school because of unsafe terrain and damaged bridges that they are forced to cross. To address this reality Sebastien designed and built a foldable, transportable bridge that students can wear like a back pack and deploy as needed. Going forward he would like to create a kit that would include the design and procedure, using materials native o the region, so that students and communities could build it themselves. Sebastien received the Bronze Medal and the Concordia University Award for Outstanding Achievement In Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Regional competition in Montreal and went on to receive the ArcelorMittal 500 dollar cash prize at the Provincial Competition in St. Hubert Quebec. Sebastien would like to eventually continue his post secondary studies in the fields of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning.
