Biographies
Bryon - My name is Bryon Leung. I was born in Toronto, Canada, and was in the gifted program since second grade. I am currently in grade 10 at Northern Secondary School. In school, I do not engage in many extracurricular activities, although I do participate in affairs involving our student council as a class representative. In the community, I work at the school library. My interests are mainly in pure science, but I also am interested in most other forms of academic study (especially social sciences, music and politics). I also enjoy mathematics; I was third place for the ABACUS math challenge in 2008. In my spare time, I like to look up random articles on various subjects on the Web, play the piano, or tinker with others’ unwanted devices to create various kinds of gadgets. I hope to do my post-secondary studies at University of Toronto, and I wish to pursue a career in some field of science, preferably biotechnology, cybernetics, or quantum physics. The Toronto Sci-Tech Fair was the first time I competed in a formal science competition. It was through it that I arrived here at the Canada-Wide Science Fair.
Julia - I am a grade 10 student in the gifted program at Northern Secondary School with a keen interest in math and the sciences and intend to pursue a career in the medical field. I love to sing, to dance and play various musical instruments (i.e. violin, guitar, harmonium, etc.). I am very inquisitive about the world around me and use every life experience as an opportunity to learn something new. Writing is my passion; it’s a medium through which I can express my innermost feelings and thoughts. My work has been published in various anthologies and has been placed at the top in various competitions. For two consecutive years, I have been placed second and third in Abacus Mathematics International Competition and won the Anne Cirillo Award at the Math Olympics. I completed grade 8 and 9 as the top-scoring student in my school as well. In my spare time, I volunteer at various community centres and organizations and help others whenever I can. Someday, I hope to work with organizations, such as Doctors Without Borders, and help those in need around the globe.

Rot or Not: Studies of the Dental Effects of Acid and Sugar in Soft Drinks
Division:International
Category:Intermediate
Region:Toronto
City:Toronto, ON
School:Northern S.S.
Abstract:Effects of soft drinks on teeth were studied in vitro by first immersing pig’s teeth in test solutions and then in a bacteria-containing medium. Damage, measured by teeth’s mass reduction, was found to be proportional to acid concentration in immersion, and in infection, sugar content. Exposure to acid in soft drinks can result in damage even with proper hygiene to remove sugar deposits.
