Biographie
My name is Marika Moskalyk and I'm a Grade 8 student at Marymount Academy in Sudbury, Ontario. Not only do I love science, I also love fashion. I saw a TED talk last summer on BioCouture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p3-vl9VFYU), which is a research project by fashion designer Suzanne Lee from London, UK that uses Acetobacter Gluconacetobacter xylinus bacteria to grow textiles. I was amazed at how science could be used to create really cool, environmentally friendly textiles to use to create clothing, and I decided to create an experiment to explore different types of solutions to see which would grow the strongest, thinnest and most interesting colours. I chose blueberries from Sudbury and organic vegetable and fruit waste as sources of extra vitamins for growing bacterial cellulose as my variables. Knowing what I do about renewable resources, and the energy that goes into growing materials for textiles, being able to grow new materials for clothing that are entirely biodegradable, eco-friendly and use minimal energy sources could be revolutionary. My advice is to always pick a subject for your science fair that you are really interested in and that you know you will enjoy exploring. Sommaire:My project was all about growing microbial cellulose from a Kombucha green tea solution using Gluconacetobacter xylinus bacteria to be as thin and strong as possible for use as a biodegradable textile, which I call BioFabric. My variables included blueberries and a mixture of fruit & vegetable waste. Growing new materials for clothing that are biodegradable, eco-friendly and use minimal energy sources could be revolutionary.
