My name is Savannah Issaluk and I am Inuk. I live in Chesterfield Inlet (Igluligaarjuk), Nunavut on the west coast of Hudson Bay. ‘Chester’ as we call it, is one of the oldest and smallest settlements in the Arctic. Chester is home to some of the best hunting in our region. I love to travel on the land with my family and: collect eggs, pick berries, fish with spears (and bare hands), hunt for Caribou, and watch Polar Bears. This year I caught my first Polar Bear with my father on a hunting trip, and he was extremely proud of me! I am a grade 12 student at Victor Sammurtok School, hoping to graduate next year. I am not sure what I want to do after I graduate, but I know I want to get a high paying job so I can continue to hunt and spend time on the land. I have 2 younger brothers, and I almost always get along with them. I have attended the Arctic Winter Games twice for Inuit Sports, in which we compete in traditional Inuit games. I also play hockey and love driving really fast on my Honda (ATV) and snowmobile. |
| Savannah Issaluk Size Does Matter: A Study of Qamutik Length
Division: | Physical & Mathematical Sciences | Category: | Senior | Region: | Kivalliq | City: | Chesterfield Inlet, NU | School: | Victor Sammurtok | Abstract: | Qamutiks are as much a part of Inuit Culture as the Iglu, but no one in my community could tell me what the best length to build one was. The purpose of my project was to build seven different sized models of Qamutiks and performed several different tests to definitively determine that an 18 foot Qamutik requires the least amount of force to move. |
