Biography
I am a Grade 9 student at Arthur A Leach Junior High in Winnipeg, where I am a member of the Science Club, debate club and the school badminton team. When I am not at school, I can usually be found reading a book. In the summer, my brother and I grow garlic to sell at the farmer’s market. We also sell beets, carrots and sweet corn that we grow on our farm at Fort Whyte, Manitoba. My favourite sports are badminton, curling and golf. My favourite vacation is to go on a cruise- I have been to the east and west Caribbean and to Mexico, so far. I plan to become a food scientist and see myself running my own food product development company by the time I am 30!

What is the effect of garlic when used as a biological seed treatment?
Division:Biotechnology / Environmental Innovation
Category:Intermediate
Region:Manitoba Schools Science Symposium
City:Winnipeg, MB
School:Arthur A. Leach School
Abstract:Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to determine whether the yield and vigour-increasing effect of garlic powder used as a seed treatment on wheat, field pea and soybeans is due to protection from fungi or to growth promotion. Results indicate the increased yield of the garlic powder treated seeds is more likely due to growth enhancement than to antifungal activity.
