Biography
My School is Anna McCrea Public School in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. I started a Natural Environment Education Program in my school with a couple of classmates. I am involved in many activities at my local YMCA that I participate in and volunteer for. I am a red stripe belt in Tae Kwon Do, participate in rhythmic gymnastics, and yoga. I am a volunteer swimming and gymnastics coach which I love. My favourite things to do in my spare time are to make bars of soap and go hiking in wetlands. I love amphibians and want to be a herptologist as a career. I got the inspiration for my project from finding out how much road salt my city uses per year. One way to further develop my invesigation would be to do a similar test, except instead of road salt, use ice melting alternatives. Some advice I would give to other students wanting to do a science fair project is to find out from your teacher early in the school year when science fair is if you wish to use plants, so you are not rushed when it comes time to do your project.

Abstract:Analysis of the effect NaCl road salt has on green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and radish (Raphanus sativus) plants focussing on the germination rate, root growth weight, and plant condition/health. Seeds and plants were watered with 0, 20, 38g/L or a road sample <20g/L of melt water. I found that >20 g/L concentration negatively effected germination, root weight, and health of the plants.
