Jason - My name is Jason Cao, and I am a grade 11 student from York Mills CI. My love and interest for science bloomed when I was only 7 or 8. I would go to the library and borrow almost 50 books on science, mostly on astronomy, biology, and chemistry. My interests sort of cycled between the three as I got older. My inspiration sort of came from a passion in innovation and discovery. Anything new, anything spectacular, would instantly take my breath away and leave me immersed in a world of my own. I conducted this experiment because I always had a thing about plants, and to have a way to innovate on plants entirely was pretty high up on my bucket list. We injected chemicals into plants and had it produce a ton more oxygen! On top of it all, it made the plant more healthy. Win for humans, win for plants, what more do we want? To take this further, we can test more plants, more chemicals (specifically chosen), and apply it in different ways. For anyone else reading this and thinking of doing a science project, take that leap of faith and JUST DO IT!!!
Catherine - Catherine Zhang is a high-school student that loves to get very involved with her school and community. She spends a lot of her time in the various school councils and leads many academic clubs at her school. She is the enthusiastic head of the chemistry club, performs in the school band, and loves water sports. In her own time, she gives back to the community by volunteering through her own start-up art program. As for her Science Fair project, she had previously conducted an experiment in which she gave drugs to bean plants that she grew. After learning in class that some people must carry around an oxygen tank due to respiratory diseases, she combined all her inspirations to try to find a way to inject plants with something that will increase their rate of photosynthesis. Further investigations will be to inject more types of plants with more chemicals in order for a plant to act as a more convenient source of oxygen. As for other students thinking about doing a project, her advice to them would be to aspire to follow a unique idea that they thought of themselves to truly be passionate about their project.

Plants on Drugs: Miracle Fluid - The Effect of Chemical Injection on Plants
Challenge:Discovery
Category:Senior
Region:Toronto
City:Toronto, ON
School:York Mills C.I
Abstract:This project explores an alternative way to deliver essential nutrients to plants - by direct injection into plant tissue. Data on carbon dioxide intake, pre-injection and post injection; plant growth and overall plant health are discussed, along with side effects and repercussions.
