Biography
My name is Izzy Shewchuk. I go to Peace River High School in Peace River, Alberta. That is five hours north of Edmonton. I participate in many things within my community, such as community theater, my town's Interact Club, my school's GSA, and I participate in Girl Guides. Regarding my project, I wanted to learn more about how sunscreen worked, I use a lot of sunscreen, and want to understand how to use it effectively. If I have the opportunity to continue my investigation I would like to try out different brands of sunscreen to see if the varying combinations of the active ingredients would impact the degradation of the sunscreen. If I were to give advice to someone doing a science fair project it would be to find something that interests you and make it into a project. If it is something you enjoy learning about it will show in your project. Overall, I am very excited to be in Ottawa for Canada-Wide Science Fair.

Abstract:My project is about the breaking down of sunscreen over time. I tested SPF 15, 30, and 50 sunscreen. I attempted to break it down with exposure to ultraviolet light and air. I proved that these factors do not cause sunscreen to deteriorate. This helps us to better understand what causes sunscreen to deteriorate, so you can better estimate how long between reapplying sunscreen.
