| Rebecca - My name is Rebecca Todesco and I am currently in Grade 10 at Queen Elizabeth High School in Calgary , Alberta. I have been participating in my local Science Fair since the sixth grade. My previous projects have been in the fields of engineering, chemistry and computer sciences. As a member of my schools Debate team, my partner and I placed second in Provincials and attended the National Conference in Halifax last year. I play the flute in both my High School Concert Band and Jazz Band. I am looking forward to an exciting week at the Canada Wide Science Fair. | | Bernadette - I am a grade 12 student at Webber Academy and I love to be busy. I am a proud member of the grad committee, Senior Students Union where I am the head of the humanitarian committee, a member of the recycling legacy project and on year book committee on top of taking five advanced placement courses. I am also a dancer, dancing a minimum of sixteen hours a week; my favourite part is student teaching three to nine year olds for four hours every Saturday mornings. Next year I am attending the University of Saskatchewan, majoring in animal sciences and minoring in biology, with hopes of going into veterinary medicine within a couple of years. |

The Effect of Shiitake Mushroom Extract on Inflammation in the Colon

Through Western Blot and Zymogram testing, three proteins that are up-regulated during inflammation were compared. Test results indicated that these proteins decreased in cells treated with the extract, indicating there was reduced inflammation. Shiitake Mushroom Extract could potentially be applied as a natural means of relieving chronic inflammation. |
