Biography
My name is Cameron Lidkea. I am a grade 7 student at J.W. Walker Elementary School in Fort Frances, Ontario. I have been a competitive wrestler for 4 years. I have also trained in Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu jutsu. I also play soccer. I have always been interested in science. I was told by my teacher to pick a topic that interested me, so blending science and combat sports seemed to be a good fit. I plan on continuing my combat sport training as well as my studies, so who knows what the future holds! My suggestion for students interested in doing a project is to do something they are truly interested in. It will make a difference in the quality of your work and make you want to put your best effort into it.

Abstract:The purpose of this experiment was to compare impact of punches in two combat sports: Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts. Wearing gloves designed for each sport, 18 participants punched a heavy bag with two high-impact accelerometer censors attached. Overall, there was a 13% greater impact using the MMA gloves, suggesting potentially a higher risk for brain trauma and/or head injury in MMA.
