Biography
Samantha has a love of science, music, and the arts. She is a top academic, and an award-winning Grade 11 student at Collingwood’s Pretty River Academy. This year she has taken on the task of organizing and editing her school’s yearbook, is a member of the girl’s volleyball team, and performed the title role in her school’s production of Hello, Dolly! In the summers of 2011 and 2012 she performed with Singers Onstage, a youth operetta company in Washington DC with principal parts in both shows. She plays the flute, piccolo, and baritone saxophone. Samantha scored 100% on her Advanced Rudiments exam with the Royal Conservatory of Music, First Class Honours on her Grade 5 Voice, and is currently working towards her Grade 8 Flute. At the 2012 Canada-Wide-Science-Fair in PEI, she won a bronze medal for her project on measuring behavioural motivation on social-networking websites. This is her fifth science fair project. She was inspired to study Facebook Overuse at the CWSF last year when a PhD candidate, so dependent on Facebook he couldn’t complete his thesis, approached her booth and asked for her help. Samantha plans to pursue Materials Science Engineering at the University of Toronto, or McGill.

Project Unlike: A Novel Psychometric Screener to Quantify Facebook Overuse
Challenge:Information
Category:Senior
Region:Simcoe County
City:Ravenna, ON
School:Pretty River Academy
Abstract:A novel psychometric screener (designed to quantify Facebook Overuse) was drafted, statistically validated, and built as a web application. The screener was based upon two psychometric scales: one of novel creation measuring the intensity of an individual's psychogenic needs on Facebook, the other measuring their level of usage. This screener has applications in clinical psychology, behavioural-addictions, and could expand to assist the diagnoses of social-disorders.
