Biographies
Alexa - Alexa is in her grade 12 year, planning to pursue a Bachelor of Sciences Degree next year with a major in Biology. She is an avid hockey player on the local female team and teaches swimming with the Abbotsford Whalers Swim Club. Alexa is an honour roll student who maintains a 95% average and challenged herself by taking exams in AP Biology, Chemistry, and English.
Karli - I am 17 years old and a student at Robert Bateman Secondary School. Following graduation, I plan to attend the University of the Fraser Valley to obtain a Bachelor of Science/Mathematics Degree. My goal is to pursue a career in science or mathematics. I have been involved in many community sports and activities. I started swimming at a young age and developed a passion for the sport very quickly. I have been involved with the Abbotsford Whalers Swim Club for nine years. In 2004, I received the Most Improved Female Swimmer Award, and in 2008 and 2009, the Diligence Award. For many years I volunteered for the Abbotsford Whalers as a Junior Coach, and was awarded the Volunteer of the Year for both 2006 and 2007 swim seasons. Throughout grades 9 to 12, I participated in the Robert Bateman Swim Team and in 2006 and 2007 received the Most Improved Swimmer Award. Other volunteer experiences include coaching the Clayburn Middle and Robert Bateman swim teams, tutoring in math, and volunteering at the Special Olympics. I am currently employed by the City of Abbotsford as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor, as coach for the Abbotsford Whalers Swim Club.

Abstract:The project studied the effects of the sweetener stevia on the growth of various bacteria. We used saliva samples from participants and three specific bacteria types to observe how stevia could inhibit the growth of bacteria. In the final stage of the project, we attempted to integrate stevia into a toothpaste to see if it would be an effective bacterial inhibitor in a commercial product.
