| I am a grade nine student and this is my first year attending the Canada Wide Science Fair. I have been competing at a regional level since I was in grade 5. All of my projects have been related to different aspects of health. For the past three years, I have won a gold medal at the Calgary Youth Science Fair. Last year, I won the Alberta Association of Optometrists Award and this year, I was rewarded with the Alberta Education School Grant and the Alberta Teachers’ Association Award – Secondary. My goal is to become a doctor. I am intrigued about how the human body works. I chose Autism this year because I wanted to learn more about a disorder that affects so many people. I came up with a simulation so that the students could relate to what it feels like to have sensory issues. I am all about challenges. It is an honour to be attending this year’s fair but more importantly, it is an opportunity to interact with other students that truly enjoy science. It is events like these where ideas and research come to life. |

To provide unaffected students with a better understanding of autism, I created a simulation that allows students to experience what it feels like to be overwhelmed by sensory issues similar to those experienced by autistic individuals. During the simulation, students were to complete three tasks; 60% of students only completed one task. |
