Biographie
My name is Megan Thomson. I am a grade 12 student at Bruce Peninsula District School in Lion's Head, Ontario. I live on the edge of Georgian Bay just outside of Lion's Head, which a part of the Niagara Escarpment and located in an area designated as an UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. I am involved with my school in athletics, sciences, and drama, as well as representing my school as a Student Senator for the school board. I am attending the University of Waterloo next year for Environmental Science. This is my first Canada Wide Science Fair. I was inspired to do this project by the recent popularity of neonicotinoids in the media and by my interest in the environment. I hope to continue working with this project as I move into my post-secondary career. My advice to other students thinking about doing a science fair project is to be genuinely interested in your topic, and to embrace the opportunities that arise.

Concentrating on Neonicotinoids
Défi:Environnement
Catégorie:Sénior
Région:Bluewater
Ville:Lion's Head, ON
École:Bruce Peninsula District S.S. & E.S.
Sommaire:Scientists debate the role of neonicotinoids in the population decline of pollinators. This project examined the effects of five concentrations of neonicotinoids on Drosophila and related the results to pollinators. The thirty-three trials conducted for this investigation showed that as the concentration of neonicotinoid increased, the success rates of Drosophilas’ food seeking behaviour were consistently less than 75%, clearly confirming the impairment of the specimens.
