Rumana Rafiq is a 13 year old grade 8 student who goes to Truro Junior High School. Her favourite subjects are science and math. Outside of school, she plays tennis. Earlier this year Rumana came first place in the main Atlantic tournament for the under-14 and under-16 age categories. She has also represented Nova Scotia in three national tennis tournaments and has even competed in a few international tennis tournaments as well. Rumana was also chosen as the alternate for the under-18 Nova Scotia Canada Games tennis team. She also loves to do artwork. This year, Rumana was proud to have her poster selected as a semi-finalist in the Mathieu Da Costa national poster contest. Rumana also competes in badminton and debating at a provincial level and represents her school on both of these teams. Last year, Rumana got the best academic award for her grade in her school. She also got the highest mark in her school for the national Gauss math competition. She also won the citizenship award for her grade. Rumana is in the Integrated French Program in her school, and has won medals in the French Public Speaking Competition in her region. |

Each test used the concentrations 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% of salt. The seeds were grown on Petri dishes with filter paper and on soil, and their germination was observed as well as some other tests. The survival of the soil organisms were observed, and the soil bacteria colonies were counted. |
