Biography
Hello, my name is Paaka (my Inuktitut name), the rest of the world will know me Karen Aggark. I am 16 years old and live in Iguligaarjuk (Chesterfield Inlet), Nunavut. “Chester” as it is affectionately known to locals is the oldest community in Nunavut, and home to 330 people 95% of whom are Inuit. I have lived in Chester all my life and it is an amazing place hunt, fish, and explore. I am currently a grade 10 student at Victor Sammurtok School, and when I graduate I want to become a Paramedic, Police Officer, or a Nurse (I want to help people). I enjoy spending time driving really fast on our snowmobile and ATV. I am a member of Students’ Council, and played a lot of different sports like soccer and badminton. My sister and I have started a school throat singing club and we are trying to bring back past Inuit traditions. I have built and paddled my own Qajaq (kayak), and I love being outside. I am a shy person at first, but when you get to know me I’m loud and a lot of FUN! I can’t wait to see Toronto and meet new friends.

Abstract:The Quilliq was a soap stone latern/stove that allowed Inuit to survive the harsh Arctic winters. It traditional used rendered Seal fat, I wanted to see if I could develop a fuel that would burn hotter and longer than Seal. I experimented with: Bowhead Whale, Walrus, Seal, Narwhale to develop a hybrid super efficient fuel. The result are awesome!
