Biography
Hello, My name is Layla Owens. I am 13 years old and in grade 8 at Ecole Secondaire du Sommet in Halifax, Nova Scotia. My favorite subjects are Math and Science. Outside of school, my passions are entrepreneurship, competitive dance and volunteering two hours a week teaching acro dance to children 6-12 years old. In addition to being a Canada Wide Science Fair Finalist, I've received the following recognitions in the past year; CSAP Expo-science Gold, Platinum & Ted Roger’s Innovation Awards, TechStars Start-Up Weekend, hosted by Dal Launch, 2nd place Juniors and Nova Scotia Minister’s Entrepreneurship Award of Excellence for Technology. The inspiration for my project, "Submergence!”, An Automated Window Retraction and Emergency 911 Response System for Submerging Vehicles', came from a conversation I had with my family as we were driving over a bridge. I didn't think I'd be able to get a door or window open quick enough to survive that type of accident, or could anyone else, so I started researching information the next day for a better solution. I'm very proud to be a member of Team Nova Scotia and grateful to be part of the Canada Wide Science Fair this year. Good luck everyone!
