| Hello, my name is Kimberly Tanuyak and I live on the west coast of Hudson Bay in the Territory of Nunavut. The community I call home is one of the smallest in Nunavut, and is called Chesterfield Inlet. ‘Chester’ as our community is affectionately known by locals is home to approximately 300 people, 95% of whom are Inuit. I am Inuit and very proud of my Indigenous heritage. My project was inspired by trying to find out what type of modern materials used in homemade parkas is the warmest. I enjoy sewing and spend a great deal of my time making parkas and sewing material together. I jumped at the chance to try and prove what combination of material and in what order is the warmest. As you can imagine it gets very cold in the winter in the Arctic, and we need our clothing to protect us against the wind and extremely low temperatures. I love participating in science fairs, and I would recommend picking a project that you are personally interested in doing when starting out. |
