Caroline - Hi, my name is Caroline Burchat. I'm a grade 10 student at a catholic school in Ontario. I'm always busy! At my school, I play basketball, volleyball, hockey, ski racing, track and field, rowing, and soccer. As well, I have a part time job at the grocery store. I do not have time for many hobbies. I mostly read or text friends in my free time. Out of school I play recreational hockey and I do competitive ski racing. I am the top female racer at my ski club and have placed in the top 10 out of 80+ competitors several times. I do a lot of hiking and camping with my family. I have hiked Mount Washington and the Grand Canyon with my family. I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up. I got the inspiration for my project from my house. The back part of my house is shaded with trees and causes that section of the house to be cooler than the rest of it. This sparked my partners and my curiosity and led to this project. I would encourage everyone to enter science fair projects! They give you so many opportunities! | Anna - Hi, my name is Anna Supryka, and I grew up in Belleville, Ontario and am in grade 10 at a local Catholic high school. I enjoy playing sports: volleyball, tennis, basketball, and softball, just to name a few. I love both creating and viewing art/design pieces and I am very excited to begin entering my own artwork in local shows. History and culture fascinate me, and traveling to different countries even more so. I have a taste for adventure and hope that my career will take me to places around the world, hopefully helping people around the world too. I love making people laugh and seeing people happy. All in all, my career path is a mess of math, creativity, culture, history, helping others and yes, science. Environmental sciences interest me and I would love to help create a more sustainable world for us to live in. Creating a project on how planting trees can save energy was an obvious choice for me, and in the future, I hope to explore how trees are used worldwide in other environmental initiatives. I hope students choose to do science fair projects that can be used to innovate our world. |

Several different experiments conducted related distance, temperature, and leaf density and leaf properties. The various plants species' densities and leaf properties were measured specifically and recorded. Mathematical equations were developed to relate each plant's ability to cool a temperature probe to the plant's overall characteristics, giving comparisons to planted trees. |
