Alex - Hi there. I'm a Grade 9 student enrolled in the Pre-AP program at Bishop Allen Academy. Science is definitely my favourite subject and I particularly love biology, chemistry and geology. I am striving to be either a paleontologist or geneticist. In my spare time I love playing sports in general and I play on a volleyball team, both in school and extracurricular. I am an avid animal lover and coin collector. I love drawing and absolutely enjoy traveling to various countries. This is my first science fair and I am very excited! My partner, Cynthia, and I came up with the project when we thought about how much work people go through to get rid of dandelions; the herbicides they use aren't always that environmentally friendly. Thus, we set out to find methods that are both efficient and "green". To all other ambitious science fair students out there, in the words of Thomas Edison, "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration". | Cynthia - I love science, from the learning to the friends I made. My future ambition is to go into the medical field, either a psychiatrist or family physician. I love to draw and play flute, and am an active member in art club, the school band, and my school's Chaplaincy team. Every week I have Vietnamese school and flute lessons. Rock climbing is the only sport I am moderately good at. Everything I have accomplished is all thanks to my friends, they have supported me and inspired me to be the best I can be. My partner, Alex, and I came up with this project by seeing the harmful effects of herbicides on the environment through my father's garden. We decided to do our project on bio-herbicides to help gardeners, like my dad, to eliminate weeds easily through environmentally friendly ways. For those who are aspiring to be a scientist and want to create a project, my advice is: to create something that they are passionate about and that they know will help others, and to work hard to go far. Often times, simple and easy are the most effective. |

Défi: | Environnement | Catégorie: | Intermédiaire | Région: | Toronto | Ville: | Toronto, ON | École: | Bishop Allen C.S.S. | Sommaire: | Garlic, ginger and lavender extracts were tested on mature dandelion plants to observe their effectiveness as bio-herbicides. Four groups of plants were treated for two weeks, each with one of the extracts, plus one control group. Lavender extract proved to be most effective, garlic treatment was inconclusive whereas ginger extract improved dandelion growth. |
