Zoey - Hello! My name is Zoey Phillips and I am a grade 9 student at Lisgar Collegiate. I love to participate in my schools extracurricular activities such as Model UN, Reach for the Top, Key Club as well as the swim and hockey team. I also spend a lot of time babysitting and working at my local Kumon Center so that I am enabled to go to university. I aspire to do an undergrad in life sciences at the University of Toronto, and then graduate Columbia Medical school, I am very passionate about medicine and I really aspire to one day make a difference in the world, or at the very least, in someone's life. I got the inspiration for my project from my friend's allergies and our shared confusion over why urban areas have a much higher pollen concentration compared to the countryside where there are more trees. In our future plans, we hope to establish a provisional patent on our website prototype and develop our idea further. Lastly, advice I would give to someone who is hesitant to do a project, would be to: Have confidence, and being multi-faceted is key. | Victoria - My name is Victoria and I am a grade nine student attending Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, ON. I love learning! My favourite subjects include: Science, Math, French, Health and Phys-Ed. In my spare time I play competitive soccer and also referee children’s games. I am most proud of having the opportunity to attend The Canada Wide Science Fair and was honoured to receive The Future Leader in Science Award at Parliament Hill. These experiences will last a lifetime! I am also very appreciative for the opportunity to represent girls in science. The inspiration and passion for Aerobiology stems from my own personal suffering with Allergies and Asthma, which are increasing worldwide especially among children. Pollen is one of the most common triggers of allergies. Research and Technology are powerful tools that: offer solutions, help, impact and save lives. My advice to other students? Working collaboratively on a Science Fair Project that you care about and believe in is super rewarding. I would also tell others that even the youngest voices, like ours, can make a difference. Please stop by and see how our project has started to make impacts and positive change! |
| Zoey Phillips, Victoria Devine-Ducharme Aerobiology: The New and Innovative Way to Solve the Pollen Epidemic
Défi: | Environnement | Catégorie: | Intermédiaire | Région: | Ottawa | Ville: | Ottawa, ON | École: | Lisgar C.I. | Sommaire: | Pollen pollution is the new epidemic! Exposure to this biological air contaminant impacts human health and has long been recognized as a stimulant for symptoms of allergic disease. A nationwide male tree imbalance exists, making air quality worse for those with allergies and asthma. Climate change impacts pollen production by extending pollen seasons. No one is talking about it. We have the solution! |
