Biographie
My name is Stella Bowles and I am a grade 8 student at Bridgewater Junior High School, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. My past science fair project prompted a $15.7 million dollars action plan to clean up the LaHave River, which contains alarmingly high levels of fecal contamination. I continue to be an advocate for clean water. Together with Coastal Action Foundation we started a campaign training youth to test their waterways. This year for science fair I have focused on Intertidal foraminifera and organic pollution. I have won the 2016 TD Future City Builder’s Award (Evergreen Canada), The 2017 Wade Lunzy Youth Conservation Award (Canadian Wildlife Federation), the Gloria Barron Award for Young Heroes Prize USA, the Mobius Award for Emerging Environmental Leader (Divert NS), 2017 Youth Nature Inspiration Award (Nature Museum in Ottawa), and I am a 2018 recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada. I recently experienced travel to Ecuador as member of the Canadian Youth Ambassador Program. It was amazing! In August watch for my book My River: Cleaning up the LaHave River. My hobbies include playing hockey and volleyball. My future plans involve science, the environment and possibly politics.

Sommaire:This project examines the effect of organic pollution from straight pipes in microscopic creatures called foraminifera in the intertidal area of the LaHave River Estuary, Nova Scotia. I show that the dominant species changes as one moves downstream, and suggest this might be related to the concentration of pollution. This provides a baseline for work as the river is cleaned up.
