Katie is 14 years old and in grade 8 at Holy Family School. She is involved in many clubs and also participates in many activities in the church. Katie has been interested in llamas and their different colouring ever since her family purchased their first two llamas in 2009. Although this project has answered a lot of questions about llama coat colour, she hopes to continue tracking births to try and increase the number of appaloosas in the herd. In her spare time, Katie plays goalie for her local ringette team and participates in the local 4-H clubs. Katie is very curious and enjoys trying new and challenging opportunities. She would like to be a veterinary technician in the future. Katie encourages other students thinking about doing a project to just keeps trying and don't give up! You can do anything if you put your mind to it. |

Using previously published research, a large llama herd was examined to determine the dominant and recessive colour genes present. The results of this study led to the development of a new theory proposing how llama coat colour patterns (and the appaloosa coat colour pattern in particular) are expressed and passed on to future offspring. |
