Biography
My name is Emily Mertens and I am in Grade 10 at Olds High School. I play basketball and soccer but I also enjoy working out at the gym to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am an avid reader of fiction novels but my career path as of now, is in the medical field, specifically pediatrics or mental health. I am involved in my school's leadership program as well as the band program, where I play clarinet. In grade nine, I had the top marks in science, english, and social as well as the overall top academic grade nine. I have a strong interest in biology and through the Olds College, I was able to create a project that surrounded that interest. If I were to further investigate the results of my project, I would use a strain of bacteria instead of yeast to play the music to. The advice I have for any students thinking about doing a science project is that they should focus their project on their interests and keep working through the hard parts of the project because it is worth it in the long run.

Abstract:My project is an experiment regarding the effects of different genres of music on the growth of Bastogne yeast. I tested samples of the yeast on TSA plates and in TSB tubes with exposure to Mozart, silence, and heavy metal music. There was a higher growth rate in yeast when exposed to Mozart and lower growth rate for heavy metal even compared to silence.
