My name is Maddie Dick. I am 14 years old and live in Toronto, Ontario. I am currently in grade 9 attending the TOPS (Talented Offerings for Programs in the Sciences) program at Bloor Collegiate Institute. I am determined, ambitious, and hardworking and I am never afraid to stand up for what I believe in. This year, I participated in DECA, Model UN, and debate. I tutor other students in math and English (ESL) and teach piano. I enjoy rock climbing and I play piano and cello. This summer, I will be starting a free tutoring program for the children in my community. I plan to pursue a career in a STEM field, such as epidemiology or biomedical engineering, where I can combine my analytical thinking with my desire to help people. My project’s motivation came from hearing about so many needless deaths caused by technology use while driving. I wanted to raise awareness towards this issue and in doing so, hopefully prevent accidents in the future. I would advise any future participants to practice explaining their project to friends and family several times, so that they will be confident and ready to answer the judge’s questions at the CWSF. |

Challenge: | Health | Category: | Intermediate | Region: | Toronto | City: | Toronto, ON | School: | Bloor C.I. | Abstract: | Distracted driving involving technology is a leading cause of collisions in Canada. This project aimed to determine the impact of technology (speakerphone, handheld phone, navigational tool, text message) on reaction time and explore the views of the 37 participants on the issue. A paired t-test showed that technology significantly impacts reaction time. Additionally, participants viewed hands-free technology as less dangerous than handheld devices while driving. |
