Abstract:We tested wood ash as a substitute for road salt as a highway deicer. Ash-salt mixture produced traction as good as or better than salt at twice the rate, less heavy metals, higher pH (to ameliorate acid rain) and better melt rate in sunny conditions. Ash-salt is both effective, and environmentally sound.
