| Brianna - I am Brianna Grassick. I am a grade seven student in a rural school near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. I am a member of the senior SLC, volleyball, basketball, badminton and track teams. I enjoy curling and volleyball. In March, I was a Junior Star at the 2012 Tim Horton’s Brier. For two years, I have played for our local volleyball club. In April, my team won the provincial championships. Currently, I am attending tryouts to participate in the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Games. I live on a grain and cattle farm. We have 300 head of cross-bred cattle. I am a junior member of our 4-H beef club. I was inspired to do this science project because my family raise cattle. I know about artificial insemination and sexed semen. I wanted to know how semen are sorted and if I could tell the difference between the male and female semen. Future plans for this project would involve flushing and transplanting the embryos. If other students are planning to do a project, I advise them to choose a topic that they are interested in and to include a large amount of data. | | Serena - My name is Serena Franc. I am a grade seven student in Saskatchewan. I have many interests and love to keep busy! I have a love for volleyball and have just finished a season with my city league as well as playing on the school level. I live on a cattle farm and with that comes my love for animals. I have been involved in beef 4-H for six years and have won Grand Champion steer and heifer within my club and many other awards. I enjoy showing cattle, my favorite show is the Calgary Stampede. I love all animals and because of this, I want to become a veterinarian. My inspiration for this project came from my dad. We are always looking for innovative ways to improve our cow herd. The words "sexed semen" popped up and I knew this would be what I researched. Next year I am researching flushing and transplanting of embryos. This will help us get multiples of the mating rather than one calf a year. Students doing a science fair project should do a project on something they are truly passionate about. This makes it fun, interesting and gratifying. Look where it took me! |

Sexed semen is the difference between male and female semen. Sorting sexed semen could be the breakthrough cattle farmers need to lower costs and increase farm production. Farmers are the backbone of our country and we need to continually research innovative ways to help them lower costs so they can continue to feed our growing country. |
