My name is Shobhitha Balasubramaniam and I am a Grade 9 student at Summerside Intermediate School. At school, I am a straight-A student, a member of the Leadership program, and a member of the timing committee for basketball. My favourite subjects are math and science. Some of my hobbies include reading, drawing, and jumping rope. This past September, I moved from a tiny island named Bermuda to Canada. Some of my major achievements that I had accomplished during my time in Bermuda are that I won the 2007 Bermuda Spelldown, received an A on the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) Math exam, and placed second in an essay contest on the topic: financial future of Bermuda. My placement in this contest got me the opportunity to eat breakfast with the premier of Bermuda! In the future, I dream of becoming a surgeon. My science fair project has placed first in both my school and regional science fairs in the intermediate division. I got the inspiration for my project from completing an online hemispheric dominance test. My advice for students who are thinking about doing a science fair project is to definitely do one that you are 100% interested in. |
| Shobhitha Balasubramaniam Hemispheric Dominance and School
Challenge: | Discovery | Category: | Intermediate | Region: | Prince Edward Island | City: | Summerside, PE | School: | Summerside Intermediate School | Abstract: | My project analyzes the hemispheric dominance of students who have an overall average between 70-79%, 80-89%, and 90-100% in school. Fifteen students who have an overall average in each of these ranges in Grades 6-9 were tested. I found out that two-thirds of the students who have an overall average between 90-100% are dominant in the left hemisphere of the brain. |
