Jiaying (Carol) - I am very ordinary. I live in a rather small city, like to read and think about deep philosophy, and absolutely refuse to tuck in my shirt. I am confident, loud, and especially curious. I have to mention curiosity, because it's what got me here in the first place, and if I don't mention it, then my curiosity will get angry. SO, technically, our project started because of my curiosity took a liking to the topic of cancer prevention, after the topic of cancer treating viruses my partner and I thought of didn't work out. Looking back, what was just an idea back then had become a full fledged project. I pat ourselves on the back. I also assume that curiosity will take our project further in the future, maybe testing different substances, different environments, etc, extending the experiment. Who knows? I'll keep walking my walk and do what I do. I'll defiantly do this fair again. And you. If you're reading this, go and do this. It isn't a suggestion. It is a strong suggestion. Which means it is supposed to be taken more seriously than a suggestion. And if you do come and do this project? Remember: Persevere. | Bennett - Born in Singapore, Bennett Tan moved to Canada with his family when he was 11. Initially scared and apprehensive of the new environment, Bennett very quickly adapted to the new culture and grew to love his new home and friends. He wished he had moved to Canada earlier! Bennett is very active in school and enjoys participating in various activities. He is a member of the school basketball and volleyball teams and the badminton recreational club. Besides sports, he also volunteers as the school library monitor and is a senior editor for the school yearbook. In 2011, he participated in the Odyssey of the Mind competition and his team achieved silver. In addition, Bennett also participated for the first time in the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair. Inspired to learn more about antioxidants and its effects on the human body, his joint project with his partner, titled "Can Antioxidants Extend Life?” won a gold medal. Bennett feels that it will be interesting to compare the effectiveness between antioxidant juices and pills. At home, Bennett enjoys playing his guitar, reading and jogging around his neighbourhood. Right now, Bennett is living the life he loves and loving the life he lives! |

Challenge: | Health | Category: | Junior | Region: | Greater Vancouver | City: | Coquitlam, BC | School: | Summit Middle School | Abstract: | This experiment investigates benefits of antioxidants to health. Concentrations of blueberry, cranberry, and grape juices were mixed with yeast cells before ultraviolet light exposure to view the effects of antioxidants. Culture health was gauged on colony size. Results showed high amounts of juice resulted in least cell damage, supporting the hypothesis. Cranberry juice was found as most efficient in preventing cell damage, disproving the hypothesis. |
