| Raili - I am a grade ten student at St.Mary's College, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I have a passion for science and sport. I love baking and camping with my family. I am a nationally ranked age group swimmer and a cross country ski coach. My science partner, Julie and I are inspired to work with the Asian Longhorned beetle to reduce possible destruction and to create a prevention plan in order to save our Canadian economy and the Northern Ontario environment (forests) that we are accustomed to. The purpose of the experiment was to prove whether different host species (provided for feeding) would affect the fertility, fecundity, and longevity of the beetle. In further investigations, we would test multiple generations of the Asian Longhorned Beetle. We would increase the sample size and consider adding more species of maple to observe the variations. A piece of advice I would give to other students who are thinking about doing a project is to follow your passion and pursue a study you are interested in. I have learned so much through this process and am very grateful for the opportunity to work with this invasive insect, in a category I am passionate about. | | Julie - I am a grade ten French Immersion student at St. Mary's College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I have an active life style that includes cross country ski coaching, competitive swimming, canoeing, and backcountry camping. I am also involved in school activities such as Senior Senate, Me-to-We, and assisting in my school garden. I enjoy public speaking and singing with the Algoma Conservatory of Music. My science fair partner, Raili and I are interested in invasive species and the impact they have on boreal forests. With the assistance of the Great Lakes Forestry Research Centre, we hope to continue our studies on invasive species and create effective ways to restrict them from Canadian ecosystems. I would encourage other students to become involved in science by pursuing a study that they are passionate about. Continue to ask questions, and be curious about the world around you. There is so much to learn! |

The Effect of Different Acer Species on Adult Asian Longhorned Beetles
