Living in the Sydney Tar Ponds; an analysis of the microbial community
Division:Biotechnology
Category:Senior
Region:Strait
City:St. Peter's, NS
School:Richmond Academy
Abstract:The purpose of the project "Living in the Sydney Tar Ponds" was initially to determine the feasibility of the use of biological remediation to clean up the Tar Ponds' toxic sludge. This was done through the use of Biolog Ecoplates, which contain 31 common carbon substrates. Although this process would take longer than the proposed incineration of the sludge, it would be less environmentally challenging
